The timing belt is a component of the internal engine; it rotates the engine’s cam and crankshaft in sync, and ensures that the cylinders fire at the correct time.
Simply put, your engine will not run without a fully functioning timing belt. Like most things in your vehicle, these eventually wear out and need to be replaced.
