Why Is My Check Engine Light On While Driving in Fairfax, VA?

October 13, 2021

If your check engine light is on while driving then it likely means that your vehicle is trying to communicate an issue with you.

The warning lights on your vehicle are there for a reason and they should never go unnoticed. In this article, we will discuss the possible causes for your illuminated check engine light so you can make an educated decision on what to do as a next step.

Why Is My Check Engine Light On?

1) Overheating or misfiring of the engine – Misfires occur due to faults with

spark plugs, malfunctioning ignition coils or carbon tracking. You would need to bring your vehicle to an auto repair shop to determine the exact cause.

2) Oxygen sensor warning – The oxygen sensor monitors the unburned oxygen that comes out of your exhaust. This helps accurately monitor fuel consumption. A faulty oxygen sensor can greatly reduce your fuel efficiency and can even cause damage to your spark plugs and catalytic converter.

3) Faulty catalytic converter – Emissions are a great cause of concern in today’s world, and that’s one reason the catalytic converter is so important. It converts dangerous carbon monoxide into carbon dioxide and, without this important function, your car will not pass the vehicle emissions test required for registering with your state department of transportation. A damaged catalytic converter or a clogged catalytic converter can also lower your fuel economy and cause your car to run at a hotter temperature.
